The Podcast Community on Facebook has come together this season to record an audio version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This reading is based on an edited version of the story created by Dickens himself for his own live readings.

This project is in addition to our 6th Annual Live Reading of A Christmas Carol which is happening this Sunday, December 18, 2012 at 6pm EST.

Video: A rainy day in Ohio

For the last several days I have been back in Ohio for the kick-off of the Saturday6 program. I added 1 day to my trip in order to spend some time with my family that still lives here. I moved to Los Angeles 25 years ago and don’t get back very often. We were on our way to visit my Aunt and Uncle when it started bucketing down. It has been a very wet Spring this year and we even had some flooding along our route. I decided to capture a short piece of our ride and by accident an Amish buggy came trotting by in the other direction.

Food: Christmas Oatmeal Recipe and Video

It’s the holidays again and this year I am remembering to post about my Christmas Morning Oatmeal early, so more of you can take advantage of it. The fact is, I put a reminder in my calendar last Christmas Eve so I didn’t forget.

I make up this batch of overnight oatmeal as the last thing I do on Christmas Eve. Most everyone is long asleep as I add the ingredients to the slow cooker, including left over cream, half-n-half, dried fruit and whatever other tasty treats have come into the house over the holidays. This makes it a little different each year, bit always good and always special.

With a kid in the house, having to wait until breakfast is made could make them burst with excitement and anticipation, so this oatmeal allows us to get up, grab a bowl and some coffee and move right on to opening presents. I think this is a perfect compromise — we get some food and the boy gets to move on with the festivities. As hard as it is for me to believe it, the boy is now 12, but he inherited his morning personality from his mother, so while it might be a little later start, wakeup will still be pretty early.

This short video was shot by aforementioned “boy”, so it is a little rocky at times, but it gives you all the information your need and a little glimpse of our holiday in progress.

Ric Turner’s Christmas Light Show 2010 – Snowball Blaster – The Game

Anyone can LOOK at Christmas lights, but can you PLAY your Christmas Lights?

Ric Turner of Santa Clarita ups the ante from last year’s Christmas Light Hero by creating an interactive video game — Snowball Blaster — using the Christmas lights on his house. Players sit in a moving rocket seat and try to blast the snowballs to help Santa make his rounds. The garage door is the play field and the entire house interacts with the game. Old school arcade fun on an entirely new scale!

Ric adds…

“The Christmas Light video game – Snowball Blaster! Hop in Santa’s electric training sled and grab the game controller for an adventure in snowball dodging. Press the left button to move left and the right to move right. Make it past all the snowballs for a big light show! (nobody has made it yet!) Game is easy enough for kids and challenging for adults… and quite addictive. High score so far is 910.”

Snowball Blaster has 128 channels of Light-o-rama controlled by a PC. The game logic is running on a Basic Stamp which accepts inputs from the player switches and controls the Red Arrows with sold state relays. The BS also sends logic level triggers to the LOR system for Game start and Crash. The snowballs, scoreboard (and the rest of the light show live in the LOR program.) There are separate LOR programs for Attract, Crash and Game play. The BS knows when the snowballs reach the bottom, and compares that to where it knows the Arrow is to detect crashes.

The game is designed around the limitation of having very few positions to light up. The timing of when they light up is more versatile, so that’s where the game lives. It’s easy to learn, starts easy and gets harder pretty quick. The audio is broadcast on FM so people watching in cars get a good show too.

My Limoncello production for 2010

Just in time for the holidays, my batch of limoncello (an Italian cordial or digestivo) has completed its rest and is now bottled up and ready for tasting. I made only half as much as I made last year as I didn’t plan on making gifts with it. Even so, there is still enough to last me for quite a while.

Audio: Tech Nation interview with Chip Heath on How to Change

I listened to this interview while driving around on consulting calls and I almost had to stop by the side of the road so I could make some notes. Even in this short interview, Chip Heath, gives some great, though-provoking, information that I was able to put into use immediately.

Heath talks about how important it is to use emotion when attempting to change anything. I think that over time I have fallen back more and more on analytical defenses and arguments instead of starting with the emotion that makes the change so important to me.

Listen to the interview, and read the book, to find out more about “the elephant and the rider” and how they work in combination to encourage or discourage change.

I will be picking up the book as soon as I can to explore these concepts further.

What I’m Reading…The Compassionate Instinct

Over the years I have often wondered if maybe nice guys really do finish last. I am not the most competitive person in the world and sometimes think it has held me back. That makes “The Compassionate Instinct: The Science of Human Goodness” a good read for me. It is made up of short essays which use hard science to tease out the existence, need and desire for compassion in all its forms. There are essays on hope, empathy, forgiveness and the whole continuum of compassionate behaviors in all primates, including humans.

The essay-based format allows for quick dives into the content, so you don’t feel you have to swallow the entire book at one sitting. Time spent thinking about what you have read is important, and almost required, as you delve into some of the deepest aspects of what makes us human.

This is the “pilot” episode of a new series I am working on where I take a few moments at “the end of the day” and think about something that has happened, thoughts that have arisen that day and what lies ahead.
